For the first time in decades, there are more job openings than job seekers. This particularly true in the IT industry.
During my first few post-graduate years, unemployment rates were at “Great Recession” levels of 6.5%. Not only were jobs hard to come by, but for a recent grad… practically impossible.
Today, the pendulum has swung the opposite direction. Only 13% of IT job openings can be filled by our university graduates. Sitting here in 2020, there are:
Over 500,000 open IT positions
14,000 UI/UX job openings
2.3 million AI/Machine learning experts are needed
By 2022, 3.5 million cybersecurity job openings are expected
According to Emerson, the problem has reached a crisis point. Emerson found that while students are twice as likely to study in the STEM field, the demand for STEM grads exceeds the number of students studying. “In manufacturing alone, the National Association of Manufacturing and Deloitte predict the U.S. will need to fill about 3.5 million jobs by 2025; yet as many as 2 million of those jobs may go unfilled, due to difficulty finding people with the skills in demand.”
